Behind the Script: The Art and Rarity of Film Screenplays – Featuring James Bond, The Living Daylights

When we think of great films, we often remember the thrilling action, unforgettable characters, and stunning visuals. But at the heart of every cinematic masterpiece lies its foundation: the script. Screenplays are more than just words on paper—they are blueprints for storytelling, the original vision of the narrative, dialogue, and direction that shape what we eventually see on screen. Yet despite their importance, film scripts are often overlooked—and discarded—once production ends. This makes surviving copies of original scripts rare, treasured pieces of film history.

The Scriptwriting Process: From Draft to Final Cut
Creating a screenplay is a meticulous process involving multiple drafts, rewrites, and updates. Writers begin with an initial treatment or outline, followed by a full draft. This is reviewed, amended, and fine-tuned through collaboration with producers, directors, and sometimes actors. Each time a change is made, the script may be reissued using colour-coded pages—commonly known as blue pages, pink pages, yellow pages, and so on.
These coloured revision sheets indicate updates to specific scenes without requiring the entire script to be reprinted. It's not uncommon for a film to go through dozens of such revisions, each one crucial to perfecting the flow, tone, or dialogue of a scene. These pages also serve as a historical record of the evolving creative decisions made during production.

Why Original Film Scripts Are So Rare
Once a film wraps, scripts—like many production materials—were often discarded or destroyed. In the pre-digital era, they weren’t viewed as collectibles or valuable keepsakes. This makes surviving examples, particularly those used during actual production, incredibly rare. When paired with evidence of use—such as handwritten notes, unique markings, coloured revision pages, or provenance from a notable crew member—they become a true piece of cinematic heritage.

Scripts also hold tremendous value for understanding how iconic moments were conceived, rewritten, or improvised. In long-running franchises like James Bond, they are key to understanding the tone and direction of the story, especially when developing sequels.

The Bond Legacy: From Script to Franchise
Few film franchises have demonstrated the power of story like James Bond. With a legacy spanning over six decades, the Bond films have relied on exceptional scripts to evolve the character while maintaining the series’ timeless appeal. The ability to balance espionage, exotic locations, action, and suave sophistication lies in the hands of the writers.

The Living Daylights (1987), starring Timothy Dalton as James Bond, marked a shift in the portrayal of 007. It leaned into a darker, more grounded tone, reintroducing elements of Ian Fleming’s original literary character. The film’s success was due in no small part to the screenplay by Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson, both key architects of the Bond film universe.

Who is Marc Wolff?
Marc Wolff is a celebrated aerial cinematographer with an illustrious career spanning decades and over 170 films. He has worked with cinematic giants like Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, George Lucas, Christopher McQuarrie, Zack Snyder, Martin Campbell, and many more. Wolff's contributions to aerial sequences have earned him several prestigious awards, including:
- The BSC Award for Technical Excellence in Aerial Cinematography
- The International Moving Image Society Award for Services to the International Film Industry
- The 1993 Award for Best Stunt, for coordinating the daring mid-air stunt in Cliffhanger (1993)

He has worked on twelve classic James Bond movies, created breathtaking sequences for the Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises, and was instrumental to many memorable sequences in 'Black Hawk Down', 'Air America', 'Full Metal Jacket', 'Saving Private Ryan' and the original Superman movies.

For the James Bond film, The Living Daylights (1987), Marc coordinated important aspects of the famous climactic high-altitude fight sequence.
Fictionally, set aboard a Soviet military cargo plane, the sequence unfolds as James Bond (Timothy Dalton) attempts to stop the villain, General Georgi Koskov’s associate, Necros (played by Andreas Wisniewski), from escaping with a massive heroin shipment hidden in Red Cross aid bags. During a dramatic mid-air struggle, Bond and Necros end up fighting on the open ramp and hanging cargo net of the Hercules C-130 aircraft — thousands of feet above the desert.

Even though a number of the close-ups of Dalton and Wisniewski fighting were shot at Pinewood Studios' Stage B, Marc coordinated aspects of the aerial stunt work for the live-action components featuring freefall legends, BJ Worth and Jake Lombard, who were doubling for Dalton and Wisniewski, respectively, whilst fighting on a 1500-pound net flying at 100 knots and suspended 6,500 feet in the air. The sequences with the Hercules were filmed at Ouarzazate Airport in Morocco and over Sahara-adjacent desert areas like the Draa Valley and Erg Chebbi - and also over the Mojave Desert. Marc coordinated from the lead Moroccan Air Force Hercules. He also had a camera airplane flying in a parallel formation to capture the action. The aerial camera work brought unprecedented realism and intensity to this legendary action set piece, elevating the visual storytelling of Timothy Dalton's all-important first outing as James Bond.

Marc Wolff also forged a long-standing collaboration with Tom Cruise, becoming a trusted pilot for many of Cruise’s high-octane projects. On films like Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), Wolff piloted helicopters and coordinated complex aerial stunts that pushed the boundaries of what is possible in action cinema. His expertise helped capture some of the most breathtaking helicopter chase scenes and aerial shots, contributing to the film’s critical acclaim for its authentic and thrilling action sequences.

Beyond film, Wolff’s skill and creativity were showcased during the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, where he piloted a helicopter through London’s iconic Tower Bridge, capturing sweeping aerial footage of the Olympic Stadium and the city skyline.
Since relocating to Mougins, France, in 2001, Marc Wolff continues to blend his military precision and cinematic passion, remaining a legendary figure in aerial cinematography and helicopter piloting for film. The brochure includes the famous photo of Princess Diana smashing a break-away glass bottle over the head of Prince Charles during a visit to Pinewood Studios in 1986. In his book, 'Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films', actor Jeroen Krabbé remembers: “We watched a show put on by the stunt guys where they smashed sugar glass bottles over their heads. I was standing in between the royals, and I said to Princess Diana, ‘You should smash one over your husband’s head.’" In response, Diana allegedly said, "Oh, I’d love to." Given the circulating rumours about the problems in their marriage, the gesture, although playful, was rich in subtext and featured in every national newspaper the following day!

Excitement is building around the next instalment of the James Bond franchise, the first to be produced under Amazon MGM Studios. With Daniel Craig having officially stepped away from the role after 2021’s No Time to Die, speculation over his successor has reached a fever pitch. Amazon’s involvement has generated renewed interest and anticipation, with promises of a bold new direction for the legendary spy series. Despite the change in studio leadership, long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain closely involved, helping to ensure continuity and authenticity as the franchise evolves.
Among the top contenders for the next 007 is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is reported to have impressed in a screen test at Pinewood Studios and may have even been formally offered the role. Henry Cavill, long considered a front runner since narrowly missing out on Casino Royale in 2006, has once again entered the conversation—particularly due to his strong relationship with Amazon through past projects. Mobland's Tom Hardy remains a fan favourite, known for his intense performances and action chops, while Theo James and James Norton also continue to gain traction for their mix of charisma and physicality. Additionally, John Boyega has expressed interest, and his inclusion would mark a progressive evolution of the character, aligning with broader conversations around representation in major franchises.
Though official casting announcements have yet to be made, Amazon’s vision for Bond promises to be as stylish and explosive as ever. With a new lead actor soon to be revealed and high expectations from a global fanbase, the next chapter in the Bond saga is poised to both honour tradition and embrace change. We await the key developments with eager anticipation...
