Bus Stop - British Double Crown Poster 1956
A beautiful near-mint British Double-Crown poster for Bus Stop (20th Century Fox, 1956)
Bus Stop (1956) is a romantic drama directed by Joshua Logan and starring Marilyn Monroe in one of her most critically acclaimed roles. Based on the play by William Inge, the film follows Bo Decker, a naïve and brash young cowboy from Montana, who travels to Phoenix, Arizona, to compete in a rodeo—and to find himself a wife.
There, he becomes infatuated with Cherie, a weary nightclub singer with dreams of making it to Hollywood. Believing she's the girl for him, Bo attempts to sweep her off her feet—quite literally—despite her clear reluctance. When the bus taking them back to Montana is delayed by a snowstorm, the passengers are forced to take refuge at a roadside diner, where tensions rise and true feelings begin to surface.
Marked by Monroe’s nuanced and sensitive performance as the vulnerable yet strong-willed Cherie, Bus Stop showcases her range beyond the blonde bombshell persona. Blending comedy, romance, and drama, the film explores themes of love, consent, personal growth, and the clash between fantasy and reality.
The film grossed over $3 million upon its release and received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Monroe.
Aside from its original as-issued folds, which show minimal handling, this lovely, completely unrestored example remains virtually as fresh as the day it was printed.

Bus Stop marked a major shift in Marilyn Monroe’s career, as it was the first film she made after studying method acting at the Actors Studio in New York. Eager to shed her “blonde bombshell” image and be taken seriously as an actress, Monroe returned to Hollywood with a new sense of purpose—and insisted on more creative control over her work.
She formed her own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, and selected Bus Stop as a vehicle to showcase her dramatic abilities. On set, Monroe was deeply committed to her role as Cherie, the emotionally fragile saloon singer. She worked intensively on her Southern accent and characterisation, often arriving late to set—not out of diva behaviour, but because she was obsessively preparing, a habit she’d picked up from method training.
Director Joshua Logan, initially frustrated by her tardiness and unconventional working style, later admitted he was won over by her dedication and vulnerability. In fact, he praised her performance as “extraordinary” and said she brought a depth to the character that few others could have achieved.
One particularly memorable moment came during the filming of Cherie’s musical number. Monroe, determined to portray a second-rate singer rather than perform flawlessly, deliberately sang off-key—a subtle but challenging choice that underlined her character’s fragility and lack of polish. Many in the crew were stunned by her nuanced performance, realising she was no longer just a starlet, but a serious actress in her own right.
