Spider-Man was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. The character first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15, published in 1962 by Marvel Comics. Stan Lee wanted to create a superhero who was more relatable than the ones that came before, someone who faced everyday problems. Peter Parker, a shy, nerdy teenager from Queens, New York, is bitten by a radioactive spider, granting him superhuman abilities. His famous motto, "With great power comes great responsibility," was instilled in him after the tragic death of his Uncle Ben - a life-changing event for which Peter felt personally responsible.

In 1963, Spider-Man got his own title, The Amazing Spider-Man, which became one of Marvel's most popular and long-running series. Over the years, Peter Parker's character evolved, facing a wide array of iconic villains, such as Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and Vulture, while also dealing with personal struggles like relationships, money problems, and growing up. This long legacy is a big part of why Spider-Man prints and collectible artwork continue to be so sought after by fans today.

Stan Lee's writing, paired with Steve Ditko's art (and later, John Romita Sr.), established Spider-Man as a hero who had to juggle his crime-fighting responsibilities with the pressures of everyday life.

The comic edition with the strapline "Never Let the Black Cat Cross Your Path" is from The Amazing Spider-Man #194 and was first published in July 1979. This issue marks the first appearance of Felicia Hardy as The Black Cat, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic love interests and antiheroes.

In this story, Spider-Man (Peter Parker) faces off against The Black Cat, who is both a cat burglar and a new and mysterious character. The issue is notable for its introduction of Felicia Hardy’s alter ego, and it set the stage for a complex relationship between her and Spider-Man in the following years of the comic series. The phrase “Never Let the Black Cat Cross Your Path” was a clever use of the superstition associated with black cats, reflecting her unpredictable and dangerous nature.

This issue is a fan favorite, marking the beginning of a long and evolving character arc for both Spider-Man and the Black Cat.

Spider-Man remains one of the most successful and influential comic book characters in history. His stories continue to explore both the superhero and human sides of Peter Parker, making him a timeless symbol for readers of all ages. His enduring popularity is also why high-quality Spider-Man prints and original Spider-Man artwork continue to attract strong interest among collectors.

  • Additional Information

Spider-Man creator, Stan Lee, made cameo appearances in nearly every Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film until his passing in 2018. These appearances became a beloved Easter egg for fans, with Lee often showing up in humorous and unexpected ways. What’s even more intriguing is that these cameos were not initially planned to be a recurring tradition.

Stan Lee himself came up with the idea to make a cameo in X-Men (2000), where he appeared as a hot dog vendor. The success of that cameo led to a tradition, with Lee appearing in every MCU film thereafter, from Iron Man (2008) to Avengers: Endgame (2019). His appearances became a fun part of the Marvel films, creating a sense of continuity and connection between the stories, while also giving fans a personal connection to the creator who helped shape the Marvel Universe.
