'Marilyn as Jackie' (Kennedy) - The Last Sitting by Bert Stern
This playful 4-way proof-sheet of Marilyn posing as Jackie Kennedy is from ‘The Last Sitting’. The artist’s signature appears in the bottom right corner in white ink and 8/50, indicating this photo’s position in the limited edition series, appears in the bottom left corner.
This C-Print is compiled from four shots out of a collection of 19 transparencies that went missing shortly after the photoshoot in June 1962 and were only recently rediscovered. Given Marilyn’s widely rumoured and potentially explosive affair with President John F. Kennedy, they certainly would have raised eyebrows, had they been published in 1962!
Bert Stern (1929-2013) grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He photographed many other iconic female celebrities, including Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
