Milton Greene (1922-1985) was born in New York in 1922. He began taking photographs at the age of 14 and went on to become one of the most celebrated photographers of the last century. He began his career in fashion photography and would excel in celebrity portraiture, which he helped to elevate into a fine art-form. He became close friends with Marilyn shortly after they first met in 1953. Together, they formed Marilyn Monroe Productions in 1956 - the company that produced 'Bus Stop' and 'The Prince and the Showgirl'. Greene was the most prolific photographer of Marilyn, and The Black Sitting, from which this image hails, is his most famous.

“All I did was believe in her (Marilyn). She was a marvellous, loving, wonderful person I don’t think many understood - Milton Greene.”
