The Crown - Princess Diana's Screen-Matched Leopard-Print Swimming Costume, Worn By Elizabeth Debicki
Princess Diana's stunning, screen-matched holiday costume from Series 5, Episode 1, of the acclaimed, historical Netflix drama , The Crown, (Episode Title - Queen Victoria Syndrome).
The elegant and striking ensemble is comprised of a leopard-print swimming costume and a matching leopard-print chiffon sarong. The sarong is sheer and has a knotted element on the waistline.
Statuesque Australian actress, Elizabeth Debicki ,was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2024 for her incredible portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales, in The Crown, having been nominated for the same award the previous year. She also won awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for the same role and enjoyed numerous other nominations.
Diana (Debicki) wore her costume whilst on holiday, in Italy, aboard the Alexander Yacht with Charles (Dominic West) and the two young princes. The untimely arrival of a poll in 'The Sunday Times' advocating for The Queen's abdication persuades Charles to expedite a meeting with Prime Minister, John Major, to test the waters. Hiding his true agenda, he gives Diana a false pretext and, much to her great disdain, cuts the holiday short.Â
This beautiful costume has been professionally screen-matched to the one showcased on the show through the placement of the leopard-print patterns on the swimming costume across the chest and shoulder lines.
The real Princess Diana wore the outfit that inspired this on-screen homage on Necker Island - a private retreat in The Caribbean - whilst on holiday with the young princes, William and Harry, in 1990. The paparazzi frantically snapped photos of Diana strolling on the beach in her animal print on-piece and matching sarong, while the boys played in the sand. Former royal correspondent, Jane Moore, explains how Diana handled the press during this trip and others: "(Diana would) go on holiday and all the media go as well, and then her detectives would come over and go, 'Right, if you leave her alone all week, on "Wednesday" morning, she’ll come on to the beach on the island and you can take some photos.'" Diana also wore a leopard print swimsuit, similar to the one worn by Debicki, whilst on holiday with Dodi Fayed in Saint Tropez in July, 1997 - the famous scene where she addresses the paparazzi from her motorboat.
According to Marie Claire, "the photos of Princess Diana wearing a leopard-print one-piece and matching sarong are some of the most iconic shots of the royal, and decades later, women are still chasing the perfect recreation of her look"

- Additional Information
In The Crown Season 5, Episode 1, Elizabeth Debicki portrays Princess Diana in a way that’s both striking and evocative.Â
The most striking aspect of Debicki's incredible performance was her approach to embodying Diana's emotional state. Rather than just mimicking the beloved princess's outward grace, she made sure to dive deeply into Diana’s emotional world. She spent hours watching footage of Diana's movements and studying her interviews, but also tried to understand the pressure and vulnerability that lay beneath the surface.
There’s a touching moment during filming where Debicki was rehearsing one of Diana’s more melancholic expressions, and the crew noticed her shifting from mere imitation to a raw and real portrayal. This moment of transition from impersonation to true empathy is a testament to Debicki’s immense talent and dedication. It became clear that the actress wasn’t just recreating the iconic image of Diana, but was connecting with her at a deeply personal level.
