The Crown - Princess Diana's Revenge Dress, Worn By Elizabeth Debicki
We are very pleased to offer for exhibition‘Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress’ featured in Series 5 of ‘The Crown’ - one of the most celebrated shows ever to air on Netflix. This iconic dress was worn by the statuesque and awarding-winning Australian actress, Elizabeth Debicki, for her acclaimed performance as Diana, Princess of Wales.
This striking ensemble consists of a custom-made off-the-shoulder pleated black silk and chiffon cocktail dress with mini chiffon train, black satin slingback shoes, and a black silk and velvet envelope clutch bag.
Princess Diana's "revenge dress" refers to the black off-the-shoulder cocktail dress she wore on June 29, 1994, to a Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, became iconic after Diana wore it the same evening her ex-husband, Prince Charles, publicly admitted to his infidelity during a TV interview. The bold, elegant gown, paired with a choker and Diana's confident demeanor, was seen as a symbol of her strength and independence, marking a significant moment in her public life post-divorce. The dress is often remembered as a statement of defiance, earning its "revenge" label for the timing and its stunning impact.
Debicki told Entertainment Weekly that wearing the dress felt “very significant and quite powerful, but also it provoked something in me as an actor. I can't really explain it. It’s pretty incredible that a dress would represent a moment in history, or that this human’s life would represent so much and become so iconic. So that was a big day on set for me!”
We purchased this stunning replica gown, featured in “The Crown’, Season 5, from the official production auction by Bonhams on February 7th, 2024. This “once in a lifetime auction” featured 150 iconic costumes from all five seasons of the hit show, and “The Revenge Dress” was one of the most anticipated lots.

The Crown’s Emmy-award-winning costume designer, Amy Roberts, knew the ‘Revenge Dress’ sequence would be a highly anticipated moment in the show. Consequently, she pulled out all the stops to ensure the dress was as authentic and striking as possible.
According to an exclusive by Vanity Fair: “To recreate the dress, Roberts’s team got permission from Stambolian — and when it came to filming the scene, the designer recalls that “Elizabeth got out of the car and there was a palpable ‘wowza’ moment on set, like when Emma Corrin was revealed in her wedding dress. Film sets are noisy and there’s lots of tinkering going on but nobody had to say, ‘Right, quiet, action.’ Everybody just went quiet on both occasions. It shows you how important those two dresses are...Twenty-eight years after Diana wore the dress, it remains a pop-culture reference point—with its own detailed Wikipedia page, adoring online tributes and knockoffs, and an ensuing trend of “revenge dressing.” Elizabeth Debicki has said that the dress was so popular that, after she was cast as Diana, she immediately began hearing from friends clamouring to know whether she would get to recreate the ‘revenge dress’ moment.”
