Assassin's Creed (2016) - An Original Production-Made Medieval Sword With Curved Cross Guard

Assassin's Creed (2016) - An Original Production-Made Medieval Sword With Curved Cross Guard

An original production-made medieval sword with a curved cross-guard created for the 2016 feature film Assassin’s Creed, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender.

Produced for use during the film’s historical battle sequences, the sword was created as part of the extensive practical armoury required to bring the world of fifteenth-century Spain to life. Designed to appear convincingly period-authentic on camera, it features carefully applied studio ageing, surface wear and a richly weathered finish intended to suggest a weapon that had seen prolonged service in combat.

Elegant in profile and exceptionally well executed, the sword reflects the production’s grounded visual approach to the Assassin’s Creed universe. Rather than relying exclusively on digital effects, the filmmakers made extensive use of physical sets, practical stunt work, detailed costumes and purpose-built weaponry, giving the historical sequences a tangible sense of weight and realism.

The film follows Callum Lynch, played by Michael Fassbender, who is compelled to experience the genetic memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha through the Animus, a revolutionary device capable of accessing ancestral memory. Aguilar is an Assassin operating in Spain in 1492, where he becomes embroiled in the centuries-old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.

These historical sequences allowed the production to translate many of the most recognisable elements of Ubisoft’s celebrated video game franchise into live action. Elaborate sword fights, rooftop pursuits, large-scale confrontations and heavily armed combatants were central to establishing the physical world inhabited by Aguilar and his fellow Assassins, making weapons such as this an important part of the film’s visual language.

Particular attention was paid to giving the armoury a convincingly used appearance. Rather than presenting weapons as pristine display pieces, production swords, pole-arms and shields were finished with ageing and battle wear appropriate to the harsh environment of the story. This sword retains that distinctive production-applied character, giving it the appearance of an authentic period weapon while remaining unmistakably connected to the filmmaking process.

For collectors, original production-made weaponry from Assassin’s Creed offers a particularly appealing connection between cinema and one of modern gaming’s most recognisable franchises. Unlike commercially manufactured replicas, pieces such as this were created specifically for the feature-film production and formed part of the physical environment used to realise the franchise’s historical world on screen.

Its refined silhouette, convincing weathering and unmistakable medieval aesthetic give the sword excellent display presence, whether presented as part of a collection of original film props, gaming memorabilia or cinematic weaponry.

An excellent original production prop from Assassin’s Creed and a highly desirable display piece representing the practical craftsmanship behind the film’s spectacular historical sequences.

  • Additional Information

Director Justin Kurzel wanted the scenes set in 1492 Spain to feel like a genuine period film, so the characters spoke Spanish rather than the convention of having historical characters speak English with accents. Michael Fassbender strongly supported the decision, despite the additional challenge it presented while playing Aguilar.

Fassbender later admitted that, after filming the historical material, he returned to re-record some of his Spanish dialogue in post-production, improving lines he felt he had not delivered convincingly enough during the shoot. Interestingly, the flashback sequences were filmed together before the cast returned to shoot much of the contemporary material.
