Assassin's Creed (2016) - A Screen-Used Templar Shield With Red Cross Emblem
This production-used Templar shield was created for Justin Kurzel’s 2016 film Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender as Aguilar de Nerhaand and adapted from the popular video game franchise.
Created by the production armoury for the film's spectacular fifteenth-century Spanish sequences, this impressive battle shield was manufactured for use during the large-scale historical action scenes featuring Aguilar.
Within the film, the Templar Order serves as the principal adversary of the Assassin Brotherhood. Shields of this type are carried by Templar soldiers during sequences in which they pursue Aguilar and Maria (Ariane Labed) in 15th-century Spain. A shield of this same distinctive red-cross design can be seen on screen alongside Aguilar during the courtyard battle sequence. A comparable shield also appears among a display of historic weaponry in the office of Alan Rikkin (Jeremy Irons).
Expertly finished, the shield is of traditional heater form and is constructed primarily from resin. Its face is finished in black and bears the red cross associated with the Templar Order. The perimeter is painted with a faux-silver finish and incorporates simulated rivet detailing, creating the visual impression of metal reinforcement.
The reverse is covered in black leather and fitted with two leather arm straps and an additional adjustable strap for handling during filming. A foam pad positioned at the centre of the reverse provided protection and comfort for the performer during action sequences.
The surface was deliberately distressed by the production to suggest age and prolonged use. Scuffing and areas of paint loss are visible across the shield and are consistent with its intended battle-worn appearance and production use. The object remains in overall good condition.
Unlike many modern productions that rely extensively on CGI, Assassin's Creed utilised a substantial practical armoury, producing large numbers of authentic-looking weapons and shields to populate its ambitious medieval sequences.
Constructed for practical use during filming, this is an excellent original production piece from one of Assassin's Creed's most famous and visually impressive large-scale battle scenes.

- Additional Information
Director Justin Kurzel was determined to give Assassin’s Creed a tangible, physical quality, favouring real locations, performers and practical stunt work wherever possible. The production assembled an exceptional team of athletes and stunt performers to discover how much of the seemingly superhuman movement from the video games could actually be achieved in front of the camera.
Perhaps the most spectacular example was the franchise’s celebrated “Leap of Faith”. Rather than create the sequence entirely with visual effects, stunt performer Damien Walters performed a free fall of approximately 125 feet (38 metres) for the film. This commitment to practical film-making extended throughout the action sequences, with Michael Fassbender and Ariane Labed undertaking much of their own fight action
