Yellowstone - John Dutton's (Kevin Costner) Screen-Matched Cowboy Hat with Costume

Yellowstone - John Dutton's (Kevin Costner) Screen-Matched Cowboy Hat with Costume

John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, the formidable head of the Dutton family and owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, is internationally known for the traditional cowboy hats and genuine ranch wear that define his iconic look. This authentic screen-used costume is a rare piece of Yellowstone memorabilia for sale, perfect for collectors and fans of the hit series.

Included in this stunning costume ensemble is an original cowboy hat worn by John Dutton—part of his signature look—custom-made for the production by Greeley Hat Works. The buckskin-coloured hat has been intentionally distressed for filming and features a horsehair hat band, with clear evidence of screen use, including make-up residue near the band. This hat was worn across multiple seasons, most notably in the first two, and screen-matches to Series 1, Episode 9. It was likely used in other episodes as well.

The inner hatband is stamped by the manufacturer with “Custom Made for John Dutton”, alongside the name of the principal actor who portrayed him and the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch logo. The underside of the hatband bears handwritten markings, including the actor’s initials and “1 – JD”. It is finished with a paisley-patterned lining. The original manufacturer’s box, used for storage during production, is also included. The box is hand-marked “John Dutton” and “Buckskin”, along with the number “3” and a hand-drawn star on the label.

Also included is an original desert-coloured horsehide jacket, size large, by Black Bear. This jacket was custom-aged and distressed for the production, and features an attached Yellowstone Series 5 asset tag, identifying it as being for the character “JD”. Dutton wore this jacket in Series 5, Episodes 5 and 6.

A black wool vest by Schaefer, embroidered with the “Yellowstone Dutton Ranch” logo, is also part of the ensemble The vest, size medium, was likely used across multiple series, and retains its original asset tag labelled “JD Arena Vest, BLK, Series 4 #1063”.

The final garment is a chambray western shirt by Ralph Lauren, size large, featuring an attached Yellowstone Series 5B asset tag (5B denoting the final six episodes of the fifth and final series).

All costume pieces are authentic screen-used assets from the production of Yellowstone (2018–2024). The lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the series’ Costume Designer, Johnetta Boone.

  • Additional Information

During the first season of Yellowstone, Costner, who plays patriarch John Dutton, insisted on performing much of his own horseback riding and ranch work on camera. Despite being in his 60s at the time, Costner didn’t want to rely on stunt doubles for basic riding or cattle work, believing it would break the illusion for the audience. This dedication impressed not only the crew but also the real-life wranglers and rodeo professionals hired to train and work alongside the actors.

At one point, while filming a particularly intense cattle-driving scene, the crew was delayed due to unpredictable Montana weather. Rather than retreat to his trailer, Costner stayed in the saddle with the wranglers, helping guide the herd and chatting with the ranch hands about horses and land management. Crew members later commented that he blended in so well, “you’d think he was born on a ranch.”

Series creator Taylor Sheridan has said that Costner’s presence on set is “like having your lead actor and executive producer wrapped into one, but with the credibility of a real cowboy.” That authenticity has become a cornerstone of the show’s success—and Costner’s own passion for the American West is a big part of what gives Yellowstone its grit and heart.
