Batman - Production-Made Batman Cowl (Michael Keaton)

A classic production-made Batman Cowl from visionary director Tim Burton;s masterpiece, Batman, released to public and critical acclaim in 1989.

Designed by costume designer, Bob Ringwood, and sculpted by Batsuit creator, Vin Burnham, the cowl is the final approved design from the movie. This particular iteration, however, was not finished or used for filming.

This iconic cowl is a pivotal part of Batman's signature look., It resembles the facial characteristics of a bat and, crucially, conceals his identity and intimidates the nefarious arch-villans of Gotham City.

The cowl has been constructed from foam latex and showcases Batman's pointed ears, sculpted brow and scalloped edges. A seam runs from the left shoulder to the right over the top of the head. To help maintain its shape, the cowl has been glued to a black fibreglass shell mounted on a metal pole, which is, in turn, attached to a black plastic base. Black metal wires retain the structure of the nose and ears. 

The cowl exhibits some wear from age and production use, including slight deterioration and creasing of the foam latex.

Earning over $400m upon its initial release, Batman was a true smash-hit at the worldwide box-office. Audiences and crticis alike praised Burton's masterful direction, Keaton and Jack Nicholson's tour-de-force performances as Batman and The Joker, Danny Elfman's venerated score, and the brilliantly atmospheric production design and cinematography that, combined, truly brought Gotham City to life on the big screen!
